Harlow Garden Transformation with Easi-Chelsea Artificial Grass
From a Tired, Patchy Lawn to a Beautiful Low-Maintenance Garden
The Easigrass Essex & Herts team recently completed this residential artificial grass installation in Harlow, Essex, transforming a tired and patchy natural lawn into a smart, green and low-maintenance garden.
The client wanted to improve the appearance of the garden while creating an outdoor space that could be enjoyed throughout the year without the ongoing maintenance associated with natural grass.
The finished result using Easi-Chelsea 40mm artificial grass completely transformed the garden – and the client was extremely happy with the end result.
The Challenge
Although the existing garden was relatively level in places, the natural lawn had become thin, dry and patchy, leaving large areas of exposed soil and very hard soil underfoot.
Ground levels also presented an additional challenge. One corner of the garden needed to be raised considerably to achieve the correct finished levels and create a consistent surface across the entire installation.
Access was another important consideration. All materials and equipment had to be taken through the client’s garage, so our team carefully protected the garage floor throughout the installation.
Preparing the Garden Properly
As with every Easigrass installation, achieving a high-quality finish starts beneath the grass.
Approximately 60m² of ground preparation was carried out before the artificial grass was installed.
The team used around 6 tonnes of MOT Type 1, including an additional tonne specifically required to raise the level in one corner of the garden. This was followed by approximately 2 tonnes of granite dust to produce the smooth, stable surface required for the artificial grass.
A specialist membrane was then installed before the grass was laid.
54m² of Easi-Chelsea
For the finished lawn, the client chose Easi-Chelsea 40mm artificial grass.
A total of approximately 60m² was installed, with the direction of the grass carefully planned so that the pile faced towards the house. This is an important part of a professional artificial grass installation, helping the lawn present at its best when viewed from the main living and patio areas.
Because of the dimensions and shape of the garden, the installation required several carefully planned sections and approximately 9.4 linear metres of joints.
Once fitted, the surface was finished using nine bags of silica sand.

The Finished Result
The before-and-after photographs show just how much difference a professionally installed artificial lawn can make.
The original patchy lawn has been replaced by a clean, consistent green surface that complements the existing patio, fencing and established garden features.
Careful preparation of the ground has also addressed the variations in level, resulting in a much more uniform and attractive garden.
The crisp edges against the existing paving give the installation a particularly neat finish, while the 40mm Easi-Chelsea provides the natural appearance the client was looking for.
Most importantly, our client was delighted with his finished Easigrass garden.
At Easigrass Essex & Herts, we don’t believe a great artificial lawn is simply about the grass you can see.
Ground preparation, drainage, levels, jointing and installation are all essential to achieving a finish that looks right and is designed to perform for years to come.
This Harlow project is a great example of how a relatively modest-sized garden can be completely transformed with the right preparation and the right artificial grass.
